Sandbagging in Fargo
By Stephanie Jones | April 01, 2009One thing VISI is proud of is our work helping in the Twin Cities community. VISI employees have partcipated in Metro Meals on Wheels, the Overnight Website Challenge and the American Cancer Society. The VISI non-profit committee has also organized funding for scholarships through the Saint Paul Chamber, the National MS Society, the Autism Foundation and Midtown Greenway Coalition, among many other organizations.
The point is, VISI likes to help. Last week, as the Red River was rising, VISI employees organized a crew of 10 employees, plus transportation, lodging and funding to go sandbag in Fargo, North Dakota.
I won’t say the trip wasn’t hard. We drove four hours, arriving in Fargo around 9pm and immediately proceeded to the Fargodome to volunteer. We grabbed shovels and tackled the sand piles that seemed never-ending.
Around 3:00 a.m., we called it a night, grabbed a few hours of sleep and drove the four hours back to the Twin Cities. Our backs and arms may have been sore, and we may have needed more sleep, but we were proud to help donate time and sweat to the 5.5 million sandbags needed to staunch the Red River’s path.
